About NEWS 24×7
In the early 80’s and through to the late 90’s, I worked and covered most of Queensland as a Sales Representative or Sales Manager. I’ve always enjoyed photography and video. Even when I was in sales, I carried a camera with me. Around mid 1997, an opportunity presented to learn how to shoot video for tv news. I did this after work hours and weekends. In late 1997, I began full-time freelancing as a cameraman for Channel 7 Brisbane, and for Channel 10 in North Queensland. During that time, I also took on the weekend camera position at Channel 10, till the newsroom closed down in 2001.

The day after the newsroom closed, through a good friend, I was offered the opportunity to become a Freelance SNG Operator. My first job took me to Pakistan for training. My freelance camera & satellite work skills took me to many countries.

Some jobs were very challenging. For example. In 2002 in Karachi, while working on the Pakistan v New Zealand Cricket Tour, our hotel was involved in a terrorist bombing. Our role switched from sports coverage, to news. Not being kitted to cover breaking news, we had to improvise. I headed to the local market area, and built a set of IFB kits out of a pair of children’s telephones and mobile phone headsets.

In 2008, I was recommended by a friend, to take on the Engineering Manager position, at MDD Teleport in Malaysia. I was there for a little over 2 years, training of their staff in various areas. From aligning uplink and downlink dishes, to installing microwave links . Even simple things, like correctly drilling holes in concrete, to good cabling practices, WPH&S, among many other things. Most of these guys have now moved on to professional roles with other companies.

After I left Malaysia, I returned to back to Townsville and continued my work as a Freelance Cameraman, but also running an SNG for IP-Uplinks (Pacific) from North Queensland. We assist in covering breaking news, sport, and various events around Australia and Asia/Pacific.

In June 2013, I returned to Malaysia in a new role as the Director of Business Development for MDD, where I was for 2 years earlier. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned, and in Feb 2014, I returned to Australia.
I’m again back in Townsville, and freelancing as a cameraman and satellite operator again.
The media has been kind to me now for many years.
